Question: Possible solution to disable car alarm for 1999 montero sport?

I have changed the battery to my 1999 Montero Sport and it doesn't not want to turn on. I believe I have to do something with the red LED light located next to my steering column. I just do not know how to disable my car alarm (factory alarm) using this light indicator, which i believe doubles as a valet switch. Please help.
