BMW M6
|
The new BMW M6 offers lightning speed, slick styling and an engine to die for.
If one were to plot a curve that showed the desirability of a sports car, it often peaks early, trails off a bit, then accelerates to rock bottom. Most cars plateau there but a few begin to ascend again. Alfasuds, three-door Sierra Cosworths and Honda NSXs are now starting to look very interesting as indeed is BMWs 6 Series, a car that has emerged from its cheap and cheerful phase and developed into something collectible. The top M635 CSi version (known elsewhere simply as M6) long represented the pinnacle of BMWs coupe aspirations. Two decades later, its back, and what an entrance.
The old BMW M6 was a formidable thing, packing 286bhp from its 3.5-litre V6, enough to propel it to 60mph in 6.2 seconds. From there, its shark nose would run on to a top speed of 149mph. The 16mpg average fuel consumption wasn't great but when a car looked as good as the BMW M6, who cares. The latest £82,605 BMW M6 shifts the goalposts to another dimension. Its powered by an engine that features two banks of five cylinders, together they develop 507bhp and more than 500Nm of torque. It will propel the BMW M6 to 60mph in 4.4 seconds and if the electronic limiter didn't kick in to hold it back when155mph is reached, the car would comfortably exceed 200mph. The new BMW M6 can be described as a serious piece of machinery any man walking this earth would love to own. |
